President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 31%, the lowest level of either of his presidential terms, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that concluded Monday.
- The four-day survey found Trump’s approval rating slipped one percentage point from two weeks earlier, as Americans expressed growing concerns about high gasoline prices ahead of the November 3 congressional elections.
Why it matters: Republicans face a challenging political environment just two weeks before voters head to the polls. On the generic congressional ballot, 47% of registered voters favored Democrats, compared with 35% who supported Republicans, a 12-point advantage.
The bottom line: Rising energy costs and declining presidential approval could create additional challenges for Republicans as they attempt to maintain control of Congress. However, national polling does not necessarily translate directly into individual congressional races.
